On the completion of this course, students will have a broad understanding and theoretical grounding in the fundamentals of wellness coaching while also being able to;

Understand the need for a new approach to helping people create lasting behaviour change

Demonstrate an understanding of the principles of coaching and the difference between wellness, health and life coaching.

Describe the skills involved in establishing trust and building rapport within a coaching relationship.

Gain awareness of the theory of positive psychology and how it can be used to help clients alter their experience of their current situations and to move forward to gain greater life satisfaction.

Use a line of questioning to help a client create a vision statement around their health and wellness.

Understand the various elements of the change process and how a wellness coaching framework can support successful change in clients’ behaviour.

Name the stages of change and identify where a client might be at for each lifestyle behaviour change, using rulers to determine readiness and importance

Define and describe the importance of self-efficacy and four ways of increasing it.

Practice the technique of motivational interviewing and discuss how the principles can help when dealing with clients experiencing ambivalence.

Work with a client to create an action plan with emphasis on behavioural goals rather than outcome goals using the SMART  formula.

Recognise the ethical issues that may arise when coaching a client around wellness and the decisions to be made.


Module LEARNING OUTCOMES

1. INTRODUCTION TO WELLNESS COACHING

Recognise that the health of the nation is still in great need of improvement.

Become familiar with how Wellness Coaching can be used to help people change their behaviours.

Understand how the health and fitness industry has developed over the last 20 years.


2. PRINCIPLES OF COACHING

Gain an understanding of the origins  of coaching and the principles of coaching.

Be able to define coaching as a general way of working with people.

Be able to differentiate the various roles of Health Coaches, Life Coaches and Wellness Coaches and know where the overlap exists.

Understand the framework of the coaching model.

Learn how the GROW model works.

Gain experience at having a coaching conversation.

To introduce basic coaching communication skills to connect, engage and empower clients.

To recognise the value of and how to use open-ended questions.

Learn how to avoid giving suggestions, judgments and advice.

Learn how to use simple reflections.

Understand the value of a reframe to shift the client’s perspective.


3. POSITIVE PSYCHOLOGY IN COACHING

Identify and describe the elements of positive psychology which influence the success of a wellness coaching program.

Understand what positive psychology, where it originated and the elements of the acronym PERMA, created by Martin Seligman.

Be introduced to strengths based coaching.

Understand the meaning and importance of “flow” activities and how to facilitate clients’ experience of them.


4.  A VISION FOR CHANGE

Understand the need for a client to create a vision of where they want to be and why.

Become familiar with a line of questioning that will stimulate this way of thinking in the client.

Illustrate the connection between deep motivators and values and recognise the need to uncover these at the start of the change plan.

Understand the concept of creating “possibilities” and its relevance in wellness coaching.

Describe what a vision statement would ideally contain.

  

5. READINESS FOR CHANGE - PLANNING AND PREPARATION

Identify the four important conditions for behaviour change to occur.

Recognise the difficulties involved in creating change.

Understand the importance of identifying the obstacles that get in the way of change.

Become familiar with the concept of negative self talk and faulty cognitions.

Recognise two main reasons why people fail.

Understand the basics of the Trans-Theoretical Model of Change.

Become familiar with the use of rulers to demonstrate confidence, importance and readiness to change.


6. BUILDING SELF-EFFICACY

Define self-efficacy and understand is relevance to coaching a client around behaviour change.

Understand the role of assessment and how to introduce it in a non-threatening manner.


7. MOTIVATIONAL INTERVIEWING

Identify and use a set of tools that can be used when a client is resistant to change.

Define and recognise ambivalence.

Understand how to use a Decisional Balance to help a client explore ambivalence.

Understand the common occurrence of clients having conflicting values and how to help them identify these.

 

8. THE ACTION PLAN

Understand the need for goals to be set for a three month period and then week by week

Understand the difference between outcome and behavioural goals and why the latter is preferable in wellness coaching

Understand the difference between positive and negative goals and why the former is preferable in wellness coaching

Review and use the SMART formula for goal-setting.


9. THE WELLBEING QUESTIONNAIRE

Understand the importance of a comprehensive questionnaire

How to shape your impression of the client from the questionnaire

Identify what your client wants the most

Highlight any risks involved and apparent obstacles


10.  ETHICAL AND OTHER CONSIDERATIONS

To recognise specific considerations for wellness coaching and understand when to refer the client on for professional help related to their issue.

To recognise opportunities for fitting the coaching model into the student’s workplace
